Five usability tests that pay for themselves

One afternoon of testing saves a sprint of rebuilding. These five tasks catch the failures that analytics only reveal after launch — when fixes cost ten times more.

1. The first-click test

Show the homepage for ten seconds, hide it, ask what the product does and where they would click first. If three of five users hesitate, your hero is decoration, not direction.

2. The unaided signup

Watch a new user register with no help. Every pause, backtrack or error message is a conversion leak you can fix before spending on traffic.

Users do not read. They scan, guess and blame themselves — your test should catch the guess before the blame.

3–5. Checkout, empty states, and error recovery

Complete a purchase with a real card in staging. Land on every empty screen and ask what belongs there. Trigger each error and check the message tells users how to recover — not just what broke.

Five users per round, two rounds per feature. That is the whole budget — and it is the cheapest insurance in software.
